Tankless Water Heater Rebates in Ventura County
$80 to $1,500 from SoCalGas, set by the efficiency of the unit you choose.
Below is what is actually available right now, what changed at the start of 2026, and the eligibility rules that disqualify most of the homeowners who assume they are covered.
What SoCalGas pays for a tankless water heater
The rebate is tiered by Uniform Energy Factor — the unit's efficiency rating. Note where the tiers break: moving from a 0.86 UEF unit to a 0.87 UEF unit is the difference between an $80 rebate and a $900 one. That single specification decision is worth more than most homeowners realize when they are comparing quotes.

What changed for 2026: the federal credit is gone
The Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit — the federal tax credit that covered up to $600 on a qualifying gas tankless unit — expired on 31 December 2025. Equipment placed in service during 2026 does not qualify, whatever its efficiency rating.
We are flagging this because a large amount of rebate content still online was written while the credit existed and has not been updated. If a contractor quotes you a 2026 job on the basis of a federal tax credit, that is a reason to slow down and check the rest of their numbers too.
If you installed a qualifying unit between 2023 and 2025 and never claimed it, the credit is filed on IRS Form 5695 with your return. That is a question for your tax preparer — we install water heaters, we do not give tax advice.
Where most homeowners fall out of eligibility
All four of these must be true for the single-family residential tankless rebate:
- The new unit is an ENERGY STAR certified natural gas tankless water heater.
- It is replacing a conventional natural gas tank-type water heater.
- The property is a single-family detached home.
- Your home is in SoCalGas service territory.
The two that catch people out are the last-but-one and the second. A condo or apartment does not qualify under this program, and neither does swapping one tankless unit for another — the rebate exists to move households off tank storage, so there has to be a tank coming out.

If tankless is not right for your home, there is still a rebate
We would rather say this plainly than sell you the more expensive option: tankless is not automatically the correct answer in Ventura County. Our water is hard — Ventura's municipal supply averages around 27 grains per gallon, Camarillo around 17 — and a tankless heat exchanger scales faster than a tank does. Tankless here needs scale control and a descaling schedule, and if that maintenance is not going to happen, a high-efficiency tank is the more honest recommendation.
SoCalGas rebates those too, for units of 55 gallons or less with a maximum input rating of 75 MBtuh:

Is there still a federal tax credit for a tankless water heater?
Not for equipment placed in service in 2026. The Section 25C Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit expired on 31 December 2025, so a 2026 installation does not qualify regardless of its efficiency rating. A great deal of rebate content still online has not been updated for this. If you installed a qualifying unit in 2023 through 2025 and have not claimed it, that is filed on IRS Form 5695 with your return — ask your tax preparer, not your plumber.
Do I qualify if I live in a condo or apartment?
Not through the single-family residential rebate, which requires a single-family detached home. SoCalGas runs a separate multifamily program for property managers and owners. If you are in a mobile home, there is a different program again — see the mobile home conversion page.
Do I qualify if I am replacing an old tankless unit?
No. The rebate requires that the new tankless unit replaces a conventional tank-type gas water heater. Tankless-to-tankless replacements are not eligible.
Is tankless the right choice in Ventura County's hard water?
It can be excellent, but only with scale control planned in from the start. Ventura's municipal supply averages around 27 grains per gallon and Camarillo sits near 17 — hard enough that an untreated tankless unit will scale its heat exchanger and underperform well before its rated life. Should I just get a high-efficiency tank instead?
For some households, yes — and there is a rebate for that too, from $300 to $575 depending on efficiency and draw pattern. Tankless wins on endless hot water, space and lifespan.
