Just Start: How JustStartAI Began

Our co-founder and CEO wrote the origin story of JustStartAI — a community built so contractors could work out what AI is actually good for, together, without pretending to have all the answers first.

AirWorks co-founder and CEO Stephanie Allen has written the origin story of JustStartAI — a community and resource hub she started with Jennifer Bagley of CI Web Group to help trades contractors get past the hype and work out what artificial intelligence is genuinely useful for. The piece was published on the CI Web Group blog on 7 August 2026.

What JustStartAI is

It is not a product and it was not a business plan. By Stephanie's account it grew out of a working friendship and a practical problem: the contracting industry was being flooded with AI tools and promises, and there was no trustworthy way to tell which of them survived contact with a real service business. JustStartAI became the place to sort that out in the open — a community where contractors ask questions and compare notes, with a site at JustStartAI.io offering prompts, frameworks and resources.

The community, she is clear, is the point. The website is where the useful bits get written down.

Where AirWorks fits

AirWorks is the sandbox. Ideas that sound good in a strategy conversation get pressure-tested against an operating HVAC and plumbing company — real dispatch, real technicians, real homeowners — before they get recommended to anyone else. Stephanie describes her own role in the partnership as being "the voice of the contractor because I am the contractor": Jennifer pushes on what the technology can do, and Stephanie grounds it in what a trades business can actually absorb on a Tuesday morning.

That is a deliberately unglamorous filter, and it is the reason we are comfortable putting our name to it. Nothing gets held up as a good idea here because it demos well.

The part we keep coming back to

"The point was never to know everything. The point was to start."

— Stephanie Allen, Just Start: How JustStartAI Began

It is an easy line to skim past, but it describes how this company has approached most things — including the trade itself. You do not wait to feel expert before you begin; you begin, carefully, on something small enough that being wrong is survivable, and you get better in public.

Her other framing is the one we would want customers to hold onto: "AI is the cape. The human is the hero." Whatever software we run in the background, the person who shows up at your door is a licensed technician who is accountable for the work. That does not change.
